The Z scale was first started by Marklin, a German manufacturer in 1972 at the Nuremberg Toy Fair. This scale was one of the smallest model railways, and the work of genius by Helmut Killian, the said company’s head design engineer. That particular type of scale was chosen so as to bring a new model to the market, which would be the smallest. Many tried to do this before; but, they were unsuccessful. The farthest that they went was creating the T- gauge, which were designed in Japan and manufactured in China.
Marklin’s decision to create a digital train control system in Z scale was made known as early as 1988, and there were three locomotives that had a built- in digital encoder each. However, technology was not yet updated and high- end at that time, and so, they had to forego these designs. Eventually, these problems were solved, and the Z scale was provided with the most advanced electronics, such as microprocessors.
As of late, Marklin is still the leading producer and manufacturer of these Z scale model trains. Micro- Trains Line from Talent, Oregon merged with Marklin, and became a co- manufacturer and co- supplier of rolling stock, locomotives, track systems and structures which cater to the North American model. In Europe and North America, there are manufacturers that are slowly rising, and they are particularly selling tools, electronics, scratch- building supplies, track- building aids, structures and rolling stocks.
Furthermore, another German company introduces Z scale system which comes with a 4.5 mm gauge track. American Z Lines is another company that produces a string of North American models of diesel locomotives, rolling stocks, brass model steams, and diesel locomotives. In Japan, Tokyo Marui has released a line of Z- scale trains. For collectors who like challenge then working with Z scale model trains would really pose a challenge for it requires much time and effort to set-up this train.
