Williams Electric Trains started year 1971 with its founder Jerry Williams who have reproduce the classic Lionel and Ives model trains which was originally made in the late 1920’s and 1930’s.
Williams slowly changed its interest to the new “O gauge” trains in the late 70’s when he was able to acquire a device that had once been owned by Kusan. The company then began to produce Post-War “O gauge” replicas beginning with GG-1 and FM trainmaster. They also made complete Williams sets which include the popular NASA sets and military sets.
With the increase in the demand for scale ranged locomotives, Williams made its own through its Crown Edition Line. It is produced as limited editions and some of the models made in 3 rails “O” gauge includes the Pennsylvania RR K-4, Southern Pacific Cab Forward, NYC Niagara and more. Williams become major distributor of 3 scale rail locomotives and cars.
When the US economy experience economic recession in the 1980’s, the demand for expensive model trains decreases thus Williams shifted to producing economical model trains like the diesel models which includes the F-3’s, SW1 switchers and Geep’s. To date, Williams are known to be a maker of reproduction of 1950’s age Lionel equipment but even that Williams products are apparent from the original Lionel model train. Williams have always stick to the traditional train layout which is why avid collectors of model train have always preferred it.
Unfortunately after 35 years, Jerry Williams retired from the model railroad business and Williams was acquired by Bachmann Industries. Avid hobbyist of model trains still preferred the traditional designs of Williams and you can buy their complete product line under Bachmann Industries now.
