Atlas Model Railroad Company, Inc. begins as a tool company called Atlas Tool Company situated in Hillside, New Jersey. The person behind this tool company is a Czechoslovakian immigrant by the name of Stephan Schaffan who founded it in 1924.
By 1933, Stephan’s son joined the company but his main concern is building models and most of this is airplane models. It is only when a local hobby shop begun to challenge Stephan Jr. to improve some of its primitive model railroad track which paves the way of the creation of the first HO track measurement which up to this day is use.
The demand then for model railroading products was great that Stephan and his family work all day long just to serve the orders. Demand for their products continues to be strong so that the family finally builds its first factory in 1947. In 1959 they have expanded and built another factory down the street from the old one.
Atlas indeed introduces high level of technology with their product and they have maintained its standard. They certainly maintain its tradition and reputation for excellence. They really claim that their products are true replica of the real thing including small details.
Today, Atlas model trains have offered their customers to join the Atlas Golden Spike Club where members enjoy several benefits. The club promotes model railroading as a hobby that is fun and at the same time educational. It is indeed one popular pastime that has endured for more than four generations. For model train hobbyist, joining the club would be a great advantage for you.
