Most miniature railroads are adored by kids, especially when they are given to them during Christmas. Their eyes simply twinkle in delight as they see their new train running round and round. This is how avid fans usually start their huge collection. However, when you look at it, most of the fans are adults already, which is not so much of a surprise since they can buy whatever model they want. In fact, some even spend over 500 million a year for this collection.
There are different kinds of collectors. There are those who want to have the high- end models, making sure not to be outdone by fellow railroad fans. On the other hand, there are those who still go with the vintage ones, such as the American Flyer Model Trains.
American Flyer Model Trains came out in 1907. The company went through many ups and downs. Eventually, in 1967, they stopped manufacturing their own models, and the company was sold to the Lionel Company. However, American Flyer was living in its glory days when A. C. Gilbert was spearheading the company. It was able to produce high- quality trains, even pushing one model railroad company out of the competition and was the closest rival of the Lionel Model Train Company.
The American Flyer became popular and trusted with its superb operating accessories, real- to- life sounds, and smoking steamers. But, their most outstanding product was the S- model locomotives, cars, and tracks, while every other company were selling model trains in the O, HO, and N tracks. Gilbert managed to produce a train that was smaller than the O, which other companies considered too large.
Sure, Gilbert was not the first manufacturer of these things; but, he sure did an exceptional job in producing high- quality locomotives and rolling stock. It even reached a point that his name was the company.
